Caterpillar to Leave Heavy-Engine Market

Caterpillar Engine Co. announced it would not build engines for heavy-duty trucks starting in 2010 when the new exhaust emission standards take effect. Caterpillar indicated that it plans to work with Navistar International to develop future engines, but not build its own for heavy-duty, on-highway trucks in the United States. The decision would affect larger engines such as the C13. No decision was made on Caterpillar’s line of medium-duty truck engines. Both Caterpillar and International remain committed to the development of heavy-duty engines that do not use add-on selective catalytic reduction systems to meet the stringent 2010 standards.
