Fired Officials Win Court Rulings

California courts found in favor of two deputy chiefs with the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District, ruling that their firings without pre-dismissal hearings were unconstitutional, reports the Sacramento Bee. In denying them a Skelly hearing, Deputy Chiefs George Appel and Teresa Means-Ferguson were not given a chance to explain their actions and defend themselves. The two were fired in May and October 2006, respectively. Appel was fired after officials accused him and a collegue breaching district Internet and e-mail policies by distributing sexually explicit images characterized by officials as racist and homophobic.
