In 1921, suffragist Alice Paul drafted an Equal Rights Amendment to make men and women equals in the eyes of the law. Two years later it was first introduced into Congress; it has been introduced every year since. The ERA passed in 1972, but only 35 of the required 38 states ratified it before the 1982 deadline. This struggle for equal opportunity and treatment has not escaped the fire service.
