First Female Battalion Chief for Wichita

Elizabeth "Tammy" Snow is the first woman to be named battalion chief in the history of the Wichita (Kan.) Fire Department, reports the Wichita Eagle. Snow has been with the department for 20 years; no other woman has served more than four years in that department. Snow was promoted to lieutenant in 1996 and captain in 1999. In her current role as battalion chief, she supervises seven captains, seven lieutenants and 42 firefighters at seven fire stations.
