Newport, R.I. Fire Chief to Retire

The Providence Journal reports that Newport (R.I.) Chief Edward “Ned” W. McCarthy Jr. will retire this month. The 51-year-old McCarthy has spent 28 years as a city firefighter. McCarthy became chief in 2000 and has also served as the city’s emergency management director. City Manager Edward F. Lavallee told the paper, "I congratulated him and wished him good luck.” According to the city charter, Lavallee must choose the new chief from within the department personnel who have at least 10 years of firefighting experience, half of that in Newport. ...
