New Kind of Courage

Last April, my pager sounded at 6 a.m. for a structure fire. Department members knew the 11/2-story abandoned house was marked as a no-entry structure. On-scene sheriff's deputies already confirmed the house was abandoned and advised that flames were showing. Following the 1999 Worcester, Mass., fire in which six firefighters died inside a vacant building, Burlington Asst. Chief Shaun Klaserner drafted a policy and, with the approval of then-Chief Ernie Biddle, identified a handful of buildings to be limited entry or no entry, including this structure.
