Fire’s Mercenary

A tree grows in the West Indies known by locals as Gumbo Limbo. When this tree reaches about two feet tall, its limbs begin to snake horizontally. This peculiar way of growing allows the tree to thrive in the strong winds of the islands; it is said to be one of the best trees at withstanding hurricanes. The species, formally Bursera simaruba, flourishes on a private island in the Turks and Caicos Islands known as Ambergris Cay.
